Autodesk has announced the acquisition of Solid Angle, the company behind Arnold, a powerful ray-tracing renderer widely used in the film, TV, and advertising industries for high-quality 3D animation and visual effects. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the move is expected to strengthen Autodesk's position in the creative software market.
Arnold, known for its efficiency in global illumination, is already a favorite among over 500 studios and thousands of independent artists worldwide. It has played a key role in award-winning projects like "Ex Machina," "The Martian," and "Game of Thrones." With this acquisition, Autodesk aims to enhance its product offerings and improve rendering workflows for users across various platforms.
Chris Bradshaw, Senior Vice President at Autodesk Media & Entertainment, stated that the acquisition aligns with their mission to empower artists with tools that boost creativity and productivity. He emphasized that efficient rendering is becoming more crucial as 3D content creation becomes more complex, and that this partnership will help streamline the process.
Marcos Fajardo, founder of Solid Angle, expressed excitement about joining forces with Autodesk. He highlighted the shared vision of simplifying the rendering pipeline and improving computational performance. The collaboration is expected to lead to faster development and better support for Arnold, especially as cloud-based solutions become more prevalent.
As part of Autodesk, the Solid Angle team will continue to develop Arnold while maintaining its availability as a standalone renderer for both Autodesk and third-party applications such as Houdini, Katana, and Cinema 4D on multiple operating systems. Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya will also continue to support other third-party renderers, ensuring flexibility for users.
Bradshaw reiterated that Autodesk remains committed to supporting third-party applications with Arnold, aiming to enhance collaboration and efficiency across different creative pipelines. Pricing and licensing for Arnold remain unchanged, and customers can still purchase it through existing channels.
This acquisition is not expected to affect Autodesk’s financial guidance issued in February 2016. However, the company acknowledges potential risks associated with integration, market growth, competition, and product adoption.
