Autodesk showcases new Fusion 360 product design capabilities and customer innovation at AU 2021

Rethinking how businesses plan, design, and manufacture products is no small task. While many companies recognize the value of Digital Transformation, the process of overhauling an entire manufacturing workflow and securing buy-in across teams remains a massive challenge. A major roadblock is that many digital tools are overly complex and siloed, making change not only difficult but also inefficient. At Autodesk, we’re working to change this with Fusion 360 — a cloud-based platform that brings together 3D modeling, CAD, CAM, CAE, and PCB design in one unified environment. At Autodesk University (AU) 2021, we're highlighting new updates to Fusion 360 and our broader product suite, showcasing how these tools are empowering designers and manufacturers to collaborate more effectively and bring products to market faster. These innovations are helping professionals tackle today’s toughest challenges in manufacturing and build a more efficient, sustainable future. One of the most exciting developments is the introduction of two new extensions for Fusion 360: the Product Design Extension and the Simulation Extension. These additions expand the platform's capabilities, offering more advanced tools for consumer product design and engineering simulations. We expect these extensions to be available early next year. The Product Design Extension will allow users to automate the creation of complex features such as lattices and algorithm-driven patterns, which would otherwise take significant time and effort using traditional 3D modeling techniques. This makes it easier for designers to experiment and iterate quickly. The Simulation Extension offers full access to simulation capabilities under a single, flexible model. Previously, simulation was often limited to pay-as-you-go models, but now users can choose the option that best fits their needs. This means engineers can explore ways to reduce weight, lower material costs, and improve product performance more efficiently. By combining core functionalities with optional extensions, Fusion 360 gives customers the flexibility to pay only for what they need. This is especially beneficial for industries like consumer electronics, where cost control and innovation go hand in hand. Logitech, a global leader in consumer electronics, has used Fusion 360 to develop its G435 gaming headset line. The company integrated Fusion 360 into its existing workflows without replacing any systems, allowing for seamless collaboration and rapid prototyping. As Logitech’s principal designer Seter Wu explained at AU, Fusion 360 isn’t just a design tool — it’s a powerful enabler of innovation that supports the entire product lifecycle. Another key development is the integration of Ansys simulation technology into Fusion 360. This partnership aims to streamline PCB design by embedding industry-leading validation tools directly into the platform. Users will be able to perform real-time rule checks, identify errors early, and ensure their designs meet all necessary specifications. This makes Fusion 360 a one-stop solution for designing and verifying consumer electronics. Finally, Autodesk is launching four new educational certifications tailored to manufacturing roles rather than just tools. These certifications align with the Machinist and Mechanical Engineering roles, building on last year’s announcement at AU. Designed for self-paced learning, they help professionals stay competitive in an evolving industry, equipping them with both technical skills and a holistic understanding of modern manufacturing. Together, these updates reinforce Autodesk’s mission to empower the next generation of innovators with the tools and knowledge needed to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
