The Wauconda Fire Department in MABAS Division 4 responded to a single-family house fire just after 1 PM today at 1116 Madison Avenue. When the first units arrived, they found significant flames engulfing the garage, which quickly spread to the house and the attic area. The department immediately escalated the response to a MABAS Box Alarm, calling for mutual aid from multiple neighboring departments. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the incident, minimizing potential danger.
Although the garage suffered extensive damage, with its roof collapsing and the vehicle inside being completely destroyed, the main house sustained relatively minor damage, primarily confined to the area directly behind the two-story garage. Mutual aid came from various departments including Lake Zurich, Lake Villa, Nunda, Barrington, Round Lake, Mundelein, Countryside, and Long Grove.
Larry Shapiro captured some images of the aftermath. One picture shows Wauconda Engine 341, the initial responding engine, with three water lines deployed. It's a 2009 HME/Ferrara Intruder model. Another shot from the street reveals that while there appeared to be a bedroom window above the garage, there was actually no floor or build-out in that section. Interestingly, despite the large window installed in the wall, there was no second story above the garage, as confirmed by a Google Maps street view.
Further investigation revealed that several gusset plates securing the lightweight roof trusses failed in the garage area. Photos taken from the driveway and up-close show these structural failures clearly. Mutual aid companies were stationed along Bonner Road, where several apparatuses from Round Lake, Mundelein, Countryside, and Long Grove were visible. Additional images depict firefighters working diligently during the overhaul phase to extinguish any remaining hotspots in the garage.
Interestingly, even though the situation seemed severe, the overall damage could have been much worse. Nunda Fire Protection District’s Ambulance 1351 was also present, further highlighting the coordinated efforts among different departments. For those interested in more visuals, Larry Shapiro maintains an extensive gallery of photos from the event, accessible via his online platform.
This fire serves as a stark reminder of the importance of regular maintenance checks on homes and garages, especially concerning structural integrity and fire safety measures.
