Autodesk’s Emma Stewart Honored with a Seat on the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Advisory Council

Emma Stewart leads Autodesk's Sustainability Solutions team, dedicated to making sustainable design accessible, insightful, and financially smart for millions of engineers and designers using Autodesk products. I recently came across some fascinating details about her work. At Autodesk, Emma initiated the Sustainable Design Living Lab program. This unique initiative leverages the company's own facilities to pilot software solutions that enhance the sustainability of existing buildings. She also spearheaded the Sustainable Operations program, which earned recognition as "best-in-class" from the Carbon Disclosure Project. Additionally, she co-developed Autodesk's Corporate Finance Approach to Climate-stabilizing Targets (C-FACT) methodology—a transparent, science-based, and business-friendly framework for setting greenhouse gas reduction goals. Her contributions haven't gone unnoticed. Emma was recently invited to join the Advisory Council of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB). SASB is a vital organization that sets standards for publicly traded U.S. corporations, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the investment community. In her advisory role, Emma will focus on raising awareness about SASB and helping capital markets better recognize the environmental and social dimensions of sustainability. A recent report by CDP on the S&P 500 revealed that 77% of public companies face significant risks due to climate change, yet 78% see it as an opportunity. Surprisingly, 98% of cities identified climate change as a substantial risk. Investors are now pushing for more transparency regarding material environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks. However, current corporate disclosures often appear in separate annual reports, separate from SEC financial filings. These disclosures can be inconsistent and challenging for investors to compare and utilize effectively. SASB is addressing this challenge by developing sustainability accounting standards for over 80 industries. These standards aim to integrate the reporting of critical sustainability issues into mandatory SEC filings like the Form 10-K. By adopting SASB standards, companies can comply with existing regulations while improving their performance on issues that impact long-term value creation. For investors, these standards provide a comprehensive view of sustainability risks and opportunities, enabling them to assess companies accurately and allocate capital strategically. On the flip side, Autodesk is also stepping up its game. They’ve introduced new commercial Sustainability Solutions tailored for engineers, architects, and designers. These tools simplify sustainable design processes. Moreover, they offer C-FACT for Cities and C-FACT for Corporations—free, public resources enabling cities and businesses to set climate targets based on scientific advice to stabilize global temperatures. As someone who values innovation and sustainability, I find Emma’s work incredibly inspiring. Her efforts at Autodesk and beyond highlight how businesses can lead the charge toward a more sustainable future.
