WetaM cloud service brings Weta Digital’s Academy Award-winning tools, powered by Autodesk Maya, to creators worldwide
Picking a favorite world from Weta Digital is no easy task. From the lush, vibrant landscapes of Pandora in *Avatar* to the breathtaking realms of Middle-earth in *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy, their artistry has always left me in awe. More recently, I've been captivated by the reimagined Steppenwolf in *Justice League*, showcasing how Weta continues to push the boundaries of visual storytelling.
Behind these cinematic masterpieces are Weta Digital’s proprietary visual effects and animation tools—technological marvels developed through years of research and innovation. These tools have long been the secret weapon of Weta's in-house artists, but that’s about to change.
At Autodesk, we're excited to partner with Weta Digital to bring their groundbreaking technology to artists everywhere through WetaM—the first 3D visual effects pipeline available as a cloud service. Built on the open API of Autodesk Maya, WetaM turns Weta's exclusive tools into a subscription-based platform, making them accessible to creatives around the globe.
With WetaM, artists can now tap into the same powerful workflows that helped shape iconic moments in *Game of Thrones* season 8 and brought giants to life in *The BFG*. It's a game-changer for independent creators, studios, and anyone looking to elevate their visual storytelling.
The evolving creative landscape
This announcement marks just the beginning of what’s to come for the Autodesk Entertainment & Media Solutions division. Since taking on my new role earlier this year, I’ve been energized by the direction the industry is heading. The demand for high-quality, visually rich content has never been higher—and it's only going to grow.
At the same time, the shift toward remote work and leaner production teams has accelerated changes in how content is created. Artists are under more pressure than ever to deliver better results faster. Innovation isn’t just about making tools more powerful—it's also about making those tools more accessible and easier to use.
To meet this need, Weta is launching a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) division. This new initiative is a key part of Weta's strategy to bring its best-in-class tools to a wider audience. By combining Weta’s cutting-edge technology with the flexibility of the cloud and the power of Maya, they’re opening up new possibilities for artists across the entertainment industry.
This move will not only boost creativity but also improve efficiency, helping to fuel the endless demand for compelling stories. As access to top-tier tools expands, I’m eager to see what new worlds and experiences will be born from them.
WetaM is set to enter private beta this fall. For more details, visit www.weta-m.com.
