Following the devastating fire in 2019, the world watched as efforts began to restore the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Alongside the restoration of this architectural marvel, the City of Paris has initiated an international design competition aimed at reimagining the urban landscape that surrounds it. This initiative seeks to enhance the experience of both locals and visitors, offering a deeper appreciation of Notre-Dame’s rich history and the cultural heritage tied to its surroundings.
To support this ambitious project, Autodesk has stepped in to provide advanced technological assistance. Our team will employ Building Information Modeling (BIM) solutions to create a detailed 3D model of the current area surrounding the cathedral. This digital replica will enable participating teams to gain a comprehensive understanding of the site's constraints and opportunities. These teams will then leverage this model to craft their innovative design submissions.
Emmanuel Grégoire, the first deputy mayor of Paris, expressed his excitement about the collaboration with Autodesk, stating, “With Autodesk’s help, we can visualize these design proposals in 3D and refine how teams envision the future of this extraordinary location. Both Parisians and global admirers of Notre-Dame will be able to engage deeply with the transformation of this space.â€
The competition has narrowed down its participants to four highly regarded international teams. Each brings a unique perspective, blending expertise in architecture, urban planning, and landscape design. Their collective goal is to create designs that harmonize with the cathedral while offering new ways for people to interact with this historic site.
These teams include Landscape designer Michel Desvignes, working alongside renowned architectural firms Grafton Architects and h20, along with the town planner Urban Eco. Another team consists of architects Aymeric Antoine and Pierre Dufour, joined by landscape designer Ateliers jours and town planner Auxili. Urban planner Jacqueline Osty and associates have partnered with architect Bernard Desmoulin and Orma Architettura. Lastly, Bureau Bas Smets leads another team, collaborating with GRAU and Neufville-Gayet architecture practices.

As the competition progresses, all participants will utilize open standards such as openBIM and IFC (Industry Foundation Classes). Collaboration tools like Autodesk Docs will facilitate seamless communication and document sharing among teams and city officials. Virtual tours generated through our software will provide insights into each proposal, helping judges evaluate designs effectively. Ultimately, the winning entry will result in an interactive digital model and virtual tour showcasing the chosen vision.
The construction phase is anticipated to begin in 2024, concluding by 2028. Until then, anticipation builds as Paris prepares to unveil a refreshed gateway to one of humanity’s greatest treasures.
