In the AEC industry, projects come in all shapes and sizes. Whether it's a stadium, a bridge, a metro line, or a mixed-use development, innovation is key. That’s why Autodesk’s AEC Excellence Awards celebrate the best of the best—small, medium, and large projects across infrastructure design, building design, and construction that are pushing boundaries with advanced methods and groundbreaking achievements. These awards not only reflect how far we've come but also inspire us to aim higher and do more.
Explore these groundbreaking projects at the “Cities of Excellence†website.
Alongside our co-sponsors Construction Dive, Informed Infrastructure, Smart Cities Dive, and the Society for Marketing Professional Services, we’re thrilled to announce the winners of the AEC Excellence Awards 2019. We’re grateful to our independent panel of judges who reviewed over 230 submissions to determine the final honorees.
We’re also excited to reveal the 2019 Innovator of the Year, chosen from a diverse group of 41 finalists worldwide. This award honors an individual who is leading, changing, and transforming the design and construction process in a positive way. Congratulations to Amr Raafat, Director of Virtual Design and Construction at Windover Construction. His innovative use of BIM, drone mapping, virtual reality, and other cutting-edge technologies demonstrates a remarkable passion for what's possible in the industry.
We look forward to celebrating the nine winners and the Innovator of the Year at Autodesk University Las Vegas in November. During the ceremony, the winners—including the Innovator of the Year—will present their projects and share insights into how technology is reshaping the AEC landscape.
Register here to join the celebration at AU Las Vegas.
Without further ado, and with a bit of excitement… here are the winners of the 2019 AEC Excellence Awards!
INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN
Infrastructure Design – Large Project (Over $500 Million)
Winning project: Ümraniye-Ataşehir-Göztepe Metro Line
Gülermak Nurol Makyol Joint Venture and Yüksel Proje
This 13 km metro line in Istanbul, Turkey connects 11 transit stations. By using BIM technology, the team achieved a 16% cost savings across the entire project. Tunneling was also much more efficient, avoiding 35% of cable loss and 15% of traction power transformer loss during the process.

Infrastructure Design – Medium Project ($100 Million – $500 Million)
Winning project: Istanbul Rail System Design Services – Phase 1
Yüksel Proje
This phase one of a 60 km metro line in Istanbul showcases how BIM software and modern construction tech can seamlessly integrate and coordinate various disciplines, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.

Infrastructure Design – Small Project (Less than $100 Million)
Winning project: Luchuan Service Area of Yulin-Zhanjiang Expressway (Guangxi Section)
Tianjin Port Engineering Design & Consulting Company Ltd. of CCCC First Harbor Engineering Company Ltd.
During the design of this 74.5 km four-lane expressway in China, the team used clash detection processes to prevent over 100 potential issues, avoiding costly rework during construction.

BUILDING DESIGN
Building Design – Large Project (Over $200 Million)
Winning project: European Spallation Source
Ã…F Infrastructure, Sweco Architects, and Skanska Sverige AB
The European Spallation Source is not only one of the largest building projects in Europe but also the world’s most advanced and sustainable research facility. Using Autodesk technology, the team collaborated effectively across 13 countries to ensure every model contained as much information as possible.

Building Design – Medium Project ($20 Million – $200 Million)
Winning project: Buildings on East Artificial Islands of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge
CCCC-FHDI Engineering Co, Ltd.
The East Artificial Islands play a crucial role in the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. BIM technology helped the team save over $1.1 million and shorten the construction timeline by nearly three months.

Building Design – Small Project (Less than $20 Million)
Winning project: REVITalisation for Design, Construction, and Operations of Pre-World War Buildings
Urban Renewal Authority & AECOM
This project in Mongkok, Hong Kong, focuses on the redevelopment and preservation of residential and commercial veranda-style houses. By going paperless and using a centralized BIM platform developed with Autodesk Forge, the team saved an incredible $250,000 in printing costs alone.

CONSTRUCTION
Construction – Large Project (Over $500 Million)
Winning project: Chase Center & Warriors Mixed-Use Office and Retail Development
Mortenson | Clark, a Joint Venture
This $1.2 billion sports and entertainment complex in San Francisco integrated innovative technology from the start. The team worked concurrently in a master model and used a 3D and 4D approach during the preconstruction phase.

Construction – Medium Project ($100 Million – $500 Million)
Winning project: E03 Canada Court and E05 Quebec, Wembley Park
John SISK & Son
SISK avoided £90,000 worth of concrete rework through clash detection and achieved a 35% time saving on quality assurance by moving to BIM and away from paper.

Construction – Small Project (Less than $100 Million)
Winning project: CANVAS
Windover Construction, Inc.
CANVAS is an upscale apartment community covering 153,000 square feet in Beverly, Massachusetts. The team used modular construction techniques to address site constraints and expedite the process, resulting in completion three months earlier than expected using conventional methods.

Innovator of the Year
Amr Raafat, Director of Virtual Design & Construction, Windover Construction, Inc.
Amr Raafat is a virtual design and construction expert with over 16 years of experience combining AEC expertise with leading-edge technologies for construction visualization. Laser Cutting Machine filter plate filter core specialized in gas, fluid precision filter equipment manufacturing business high-tech industry. The production of filter, dust filter cylinder, hydraulic oil filter, purification equipment nearly a thousand kinds, products are widely used in steel oxygen, petrochemical, gas power generation, fertilizer nitrogen, powder coating, air separation equipment, dust-free workshop, air compressor station, Fan dedusting, cigarette pharmaceutical, food and beverage and other mechanical equipment of air purification system, hydraulic lubrication system, dedusting system. Especially in the self-cleaning air filter and hydraulic oil filter core has a very rich experience and unique technology.
Laser cutting machine filter maintenance 1, the role of air filter: Air Filter is an important air compressor protection barrier! (1) to filter the dust impurities in the air inhaled by the air compressor. The cleaner the air inhaled, the longer the service life of the oil filter core, oil-gas separation core and oil will be guaranteed. 2. When cleaning or replacing the air filter core, the components must be integrated one by one, prevent the foreign matter from falling into the air inlet valve. 3, usually should always check whether there is damage to the air intake expansion pipe, suction flat, expansion pipe and air filter inlet valve connection is loose, air leakage. Timely repair and replacement if found.
