At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, a groundbreaking demonstration of robotic EV charging is taking place this summer. These autonomous robots are being tested in airport parking lots to provide convenient and efficient charging for electric vehicle (EV) owners. The robot, named ZiGGY, is designed to come to your car when called, charge it, and then return to its base on its own. This innovative system aims to make EV charging more accessible and flexible, especially in large parking areas where traditional charging stations may not be available at every spot. ZiGGY was developed by EV Safe Charge, a Los Angeles-based company that specializes in creating temporary and flexible EV charging solutions. The company has partnered with major automotive brands such as Jaguar, Porsche, Stellantis, Nissan, Audi, Daimler, and Harley-Davidson. DFW Airport selected EV Safe Charge to showcase their cutting-edge technology as part of a summer-long demonstration program running from May through August. The initiative highlights the potential of mobile charging systems to revolutionize how people interact with EV infrastructure. In a video demonstrating the process, a driver books ZiGGY remotely. The robot finds an open parking space, reserves it, and waits for the vehicle to arrive. Once the car is parked, ZiGGY moves behind it and begins charging. When the driver is ready to leave, the robot returns to its charging station automatically. According to Caradoc Ehrenhalt, CEO of EV Safe Charge, DFW chose ZiGGY because of its ability to reach every vehicle in a parking lot, rather than just a limited number of spots. This flexibility could help address the common problem of "ICEing," where gasoline-powered cars take up spaces meant for EV chargers. As the adoption of electric vehicles continues to grow, solutions like ZiGGY represent a promising step toward a more efficient and user-friendly charging experience.
