Skokie updates

Skokie Fire Department has recently received a brand-new ambulance for Station 18. This 2009/2010 model is the first Horton unit to be added to the department's fleet. Previously, Skokie had relied on Medtec ambulances, and before that, units from Road Rescue. The department purchases equipment through the Northwest Municipal Conference Suburban Purchasing Cooperative, which maintains a list of approved suppliers. At the time this unit was ordered, Horton was on the list, along with other manufacturers like Wheeled Coach and Foster Coach/Medtec — though that particular list has since expired. The new Horton Type I ambulance represents a significant upgrade in both technology and comfort for paramedics and patients alike. It features modern medical equipment, improved safety features, and a more spacious interior compared to its predecessors. The previous ambulance, a 2003 Medtec unit assigned to Station 18, has now been reclassified as Ambulance 17R, while the older 2000 Road Rescue unit, which once served as Ambulance 17R, has been traded in. Photos of the new ambulance have been shared, showing both the exterior and interior design. The front of the vehicle features bold chevron striping and LED lighting, making it highly visible and professional-looking. Inside, the layout is optimized for efficiency, with ample space for medical gear and patient care. Additionally, the long-awaited photo of the Ford/Taylor Made command unit for Battalion 16 is now available, filling a gap in the department’s public documentation. This unit plays a crucial role in managing emergency responses across the city. Overall, the acquisition of this new ambulance marks an important step forward for Skokie’s emergency services, ensuring better readiness and support for the community.
