Skokie updates

Skokie Fire Department has recently welcomed a brand-new ambulance to Station 18. This 2009/2010 model is the first Horton unit to be deployed in Skokie, marking a shift from the previous fleet of Medtec ambulances and earlier units from Road Rescue. The department purchases its emergency vehicles through the Northwest Municipal Conference Suburban Purchasing Cooperative, which maintains a list of approved suppliers. At the time this ambulance was ordered, Horton was among the approved vendors, alongside Wheeled Coach and Foster Coach/Medtec—though that particular list has since expired. The new Horton Type I ambulance represents a modern upgrade for Station 18, offering improved features and reliability. The previous ambulance, a 2003 Medtec model, has been reclassified as Ambulance 17R, while the older 2000 Road Rescue unit, which had previously served as Ambulance 17R, was traded in. Photos of the new unit have been released, showing both the exterior and interior design. The front of the ambulance highlights its distinctive appearance, while the passenger side offers a clear view of the updated layout. Inside, the unit features a well-organized and functional space tailored for emergency medical services. A rear shot of the ambulance also reveals the full chevron striping and LED lighting, enhancing visibility and safety on the road. These images were captured by Larry Shapiro, who has documented the department's equipment over the years. In addition, the long-awaited photo of the Ford/Taylor Made command unit assigned to Battalion 16 has now been added to the site, completing the visual record of Skokie’s emergency response fleet.
