Amusement Park Inspections: Faster, Safer, and More Economical With the Elios

Amusement Park Inspections: Faster, Safer, and More Cost-Effective with the Elios

West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Canada is the largest shopping center in North America, and it was here that an Elios drone was used as part of an amusement park inspection. This innovative technology has revolutionized how inspections are conducted at the mall's World Waterpark and Galaxyland attractions.

Key Benefits at a Glance

Speed

Inspection time was reduced by approximately 90%, from 10–20 hours for manual inspections to just 1–2 hours using the Elios.

Costs

Cost savings exceeded 80%, totaling $57K USD in direct savings from reduced labor and scaffolding expenses.

Safety

No personnel had to climb scaffolding for inspections, significantly reducing risk.

Flyability’s Elios drone was used to inspect the infrastructure at West Edmonton Mall’s World Waterpark and Mindbender roller coaster. Thanks to the Elios’ ability to navigate tight spaces, teams from WEM, INTECH NDE (a Flyability reseller and training partner), and Applus were able to inspect areas previously unreachable. This led to a dramatic reduction in inspection time and cost, while also improving safety. WEM staff found that the Elios not only made inspections faster and more economical but also provided access to areas they had never been able to examine before. Even with scaffolding, some parts of the waterpark and Galaxyland were difficult or impossible to reach manually. With the Elios, inspectors could fly into these hard-to-reach spots and get a close-up view of every detail. amusement-park-inspections-flyability-2

How the Elios Revolutionized Amusement Park Inspections

Galaxyland and World Waterpark attract thousands of visitors daily, making safety a top priority. Regular inspections are essential to identify maintenance needs and prevent accidents. However, traditional methods can be slow, expensive, and dangerous. Inspecting tall structures like roller coasters often requires setting up scaffolding, which is both time-consuming and costly. Teams would have to dismantle and rebuild scaffolding for each new area, leading to delays and increased expenses. Manual inspections also have limitations—some areas are simply too high or too confined to reach safely. “We have so many places in these two parks that we can't physically access for inspection. We have to build scaffolding or use ropes just to check if there's a problem. It's really tough when you need quick answers,” said Brian Mykitiuk, Director of Engineering & Maintenance at West Edmonton Mall. The Elios changed all of that. A certified pilot from INTECH NDE conducted a visual inspection of key components of the World Waterpark and Galaxyland rides. Live video feeds allowed WEM staff, the pilot, and Applus representatives to monitor the process in real-time and spot potential issues. amusement-park-inspections-flyability-1

Results of Using the Elios for Amusement Park Inspections

The Elios cut inspection time to about 10% of what it took with manual methods. It also saved over 80% in costs, reducing expenses from around $68K to $11K. Most importantly, it eliminated the need for personnel to climb scaffolding, significantly improving safety. In addition to speed and cost savings, the Elios enabled more frequent inspections, allowing managers to stay on top of maintenance needs without compromising safety.

The Future of Amusement Park Inspections

The success of the Elios at West Edmonton Mall has led to interest in expanding its use across the entire mall, which spans over 490,000 square meters. Leadership sees great value in using drones to inspect hard-to-reach areas such as the ice rink ceiling or the pirate ship lake. “I think using the Elios will benefit not just our parks, but the entire mall. There are so many areas I’d love to inspect quickly and safely,” said Bradley Pyke, a supervisor at West Edmonton Mall. Since this project, the Elios has seen several upgrades, including the launch of the Elios 3 with modular payloads. This version offers LiDAR scans and ultrasonic thickness measurements, providing even more detailed insights into the condition of structures.
