Bill Friedrich recently shared some fascinating details about the history of the Chicago Fire Department's (CFD) turret wagons, particularly focusing on the iconic "Big John," also known as the 6-7-3. Big John is a legendary piece of firefighting history, originally organized on May 12, 1970, at 55 W Illinois Street. The vehicle itself is based on a 1952 International Harvester M65 5-ton 6x6 chassis, which was extensively modified by the CFD shops in 1970. They added a custom-built body and twin Stang HP deluge monitors capable of pumping an impressive 15,000 gallons per minute (GPM). This impressive firefighting machine was named after John F. Plant, who played a key role in its design.
The vehicle, officially designated as 6-7-3 (G-156), has been a vital part of the department since its inception. Over the years, Big John has undergone several modifications to keep up with advancements in firefighting technology. For instance, on January 25, 1982, the CFD shops replaced parts of the original setup with a new body and twin Eastman deluge monitors, capable of flowing 4,000 GPM. Despite these updates, Big John remains true to its roots, maintaining its status as one of the most powerful and recognizable pieces of firefighting equipment ever fielded by the CFD.
Ron Heal's overhead shot beautifully captures the essence of this firefighting beast, showcasing its imposing presence and engineering prowess. Bill Friedrich’s photographs further highlight Big John's legacy, whether stationed at Engine 34 or Engine 42. The rear view of the vehicle, also captured by Friedrich, emphasizes the intricate design and functionality of the turret wagon. Another image, sourced from the Bill Friedrich collection, shows Big John in action at an undisclosed fire scene, demonstrating its capability to deliver massive amounts of water in critical situations.
These images and accounts remind us not just of the technical achievements but also of the dedication and innovation that have always defined the Chicago Fire Department. Big John stands as a testament to the hard work and vision of those who came before us, ensuring that firefighting evolves while honoring its storied past.
