Autodesk Sets the Record Straight

Last month, Autodesk filed a request for a preliminary injunction against the developers of ZWCAD+ software in the Netherlands. We believe that ZWCAD+ was created using unauthorized portions of our code—specifically, parts of AutoCAD 2008. For over three decades, AutoCAD has been the go-to tool for countless architects, designers, engineers, and creatives who bring the world around us to life. Protecting our intellectual property is non-negotiable; allowing it to be copied or stolen would betray both us and our loyal customers. Recently, representatives from ZWCAD made some claims about this case that were somewhat misleading. To clarify matters, let’s break down what happened. On April 7, the court handed down its initial ruling. While ZWCAD Design portrayed the outcome as an overwhelming victory, that's not entirely accurate. This was just a preliminary hearing, and several stages remain in this legal process. The court didn’t grant the injunction we requested, but it did order ZWCAD+ to submit its source code, build scripts, mastering scripts, and third-party components for examination. This opens the door for a detailed, code-level comparison between ZWCAD+ and AutoCAD moving forward. In its decision, the court stated that the presence of numerous functions from AutoCAD 2008—features that don’t add meaningful value for users or could even be considered bugs—being replicated in ZWCAD+ provides substantial reason to investigate further, regardless of the explanations offered by the defense. We see this ruling as progress and eagerly anticipate the upcoming review. It’s crucial that we uphold the integrity of our work and ensure fair competition in the industry.
