The color of fire trucks (part 7)

The MABAS Division 5 covers McHenry County, and among its 18 member departments, many have had vehicles that deviated from the typical red color over the years. Only three departments maintained fleets predominantly in lime green and white: the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District, the Lake in the Hills station of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District, and the Woodstock Rural Fire Protection District, which is now part of the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District. According to the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District's website, the merger of the Woodstock Rural Fire Protection District, the Woodstock City Fire Department, and the Woodstock Rescue Squad occurred in October 1993. Out of the remaining departments, eight others initially had red fleets but included at least one vehicle painted in a different color. For instance, the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department acquired a small lime green rescue squad in 1982 due to DOT specifications requiring lime green paint. Similarly, the Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District operated a distinctive blue brush truck, contrasting sharply with their otherwise red fleet. The Harvard Fire Protection District and the Harvard Rescue Squad shared the same station, but the rescue squad featured an orange and white color scheme, setting it apart from the rest. Meanwhile, the Richmond Fire Protection District utilized a white rescue squad, while the Spring Grove Fire Protection District had both a white squad unit and a white tanker. The Union Fire Protection District briefly ran a white Ford/Darley engine in the mid-1970s, marking it as the sole lime green vehicle in their fleet during that period. The City of Woodstock Fire Department once owned a white Seagrave quad and a white brush truck—a 1969 Dodge W300/Welch model. The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire District historically maintained two stations, with the Lake in the Hills station's apparatus painted yellow. This included a 1968 IHC/Welch squad and two additional pumpers, a 1972 IHC Cargostar-Alexis 750/750 and a 1975 IHC Cargostar-Bean 750/1000, all in chrome yellow. The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District transitioned its fleet from lime green and white to red and black. Previously, the Woodstock Rural Fire Protection District painted its vehicles lime green and white before merging with the city department. This evolution reflects the dynamic nature of firefighting services in McHenry County, showcasing how color schemes can reflect organizational changes and historical shifts within these vital emergency services.
