Hey everyone,
Just wanted to share some updates from the house fire incident that happened yesterday in Deerfield. This is all coming from Larry Shapiro, who was kind enough to send over these details and photos.
The fire broke out around noon on Friday (May 22nd) at a residence located at 818 Forest Avenue. According to reports, firefighters from the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Department were dispatched after receiving an alert from the RED Center, which was prompted by a tip from local police officers spotting smoke near the area. When they arrived, they found flames already spreading across the first floor of this older, two-story wooden structure. Thankfully, the firefighters managed to control most of the blaze within just ten minutes using two high-pressure lines.
A number of units were involved in responding to the emergency, including engines 19 and 20, an ambulance unit, trucks, and several command vehicles from Deerfield itself, along with additional support from neighboring departments like Highland Park, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Northbrook, Morton Grove, and Lake Forest. It's clear that teamwork played a crucial role here.
I’ve attached some photos taken by Larry Shapiro shortly after he arrived at the scene. You can see fire trucks and ambulances lined up neatly, ready to assist. There’s also footage showing thick plumes of smoke billowing out from the house—a stark reminder of how quickly situations like this can escalate. Other images capture firefighters working diligently to contain the situation, whether they're raising ladders or standing guard amidst heavy smoke clouds.
One interesting aspect mentioned in the Tribune article is how lucky the residents were to escape unscathed. Apparently, someone noticed the smell of smoke early on, ensured everyone left the premises safely without attempting to go back inside, and immediately dialed 911. This decisive action likely saved lives since closing the door to the affected room prevented the fire from spreading further. Fire Chief Ray Larson emphasized the importance of such precautionary measures during emergencies.
Despite the damage sustained in one specific area, the rest of the house remained relatively untouched thanks to that quick thinking. Once the crew gained access through the main entrance, they focused their efforts directly on the source of the flames, successfully dousing them with water hoses. Although there was significant smoke damage throughout the building, the overall structural integrity wasn't compromised too badly.

Special thanks go out to Dan for sharing this story with us; it really highlights both the bravery of our first responders and the critical role individual vigilance plays in ensuring safety during crises.
Take care,
