At The Ranch Golf Course in San Jose, CA, managing liquids like fertilizers and insecticides has always been a challenge—especially when dealing with 55-gallon drums. Mike Higuera, Jr., the course manager, faced constant issues such as spills, leaks, and employee injuries due to the cumbersome and unsafe handling of these materials.
Initially, the drums were stored horizontally in a chemical shed with spigots on the front. This setup made it hard to position the drums safely, and the protruding spigots often got bumped or even torn off, causing costly messes and potential hazards. “It was dangerous and inefficient,†Higuera recalls.
He tried using a suction pump with an upright drum, but it required a long stroke and was physically demanding for his team. “My workers were straining their backs just pumping a few gallons,†he explains.
After reading industry publications, he came across information about Goat Throat pumps. Having tapped kegs before, he was familiar with the concept of vertical drum positioning and easy pressurization. He decided to give them a try—and hasn’t looked back since.
Six years later, the pumps have become an essential part of daily operations. Higuera added two key options: a remote tap with flexible tubing that allows filling containers directly on the floor, and an air regulator adaptor connected to the course’s compressor, eliminating the need for manual pumping.
These upgrades have significantly reduced physical strain, minimized product loss, and improved overall efficiency. “The pumps saved us time, money, and injuries,†Higuera says. “They paid for themselves quickly.â€
