At The Ranch Golf Course in San Jose, CA, managing liquid supplies—like fertilizers and insecticides—can be a tricky and dangerous task. Mike Higuera, Jr., the course manager, faced several challenges when dealing with 55-gallon drums of chemicals. These drums were stored horizontally in a chemical shed, which made them hard to handle and often led to spills, leaks, and even injuries.
The spigots on the front of the drums would frequently get bumped or dislodged, creating a mess that was both costly and hazardous. “We had tried a suction pump before,†Higuera explained. “But it required a long stroke and was tough on our employees. They were constantly straining their muscles just to move the product.â€
After reading about new technologies in industry publications, he came across the Goat Throat pump. Having tapped kegs in his youth, he was familiar with the concept of vertical drum positioning and easy pressurization. He decided to give it a try and purchased his first unit six years ago.
Since then, the pumps have become an essential part of daily operations. Higuera added two key features: a remote tap with flexible tubing, allowing employees to fill containers on the floor instead of lifting heavy loads, and an air regulator adaptor that connects directly to the course’s compressor, eliminating the need for manual pumping.
“The pumps have saved us time, reduced injuries, and minimized product loss,†Higuera said. “They paid for themselves almost immediately.â€
