Chicago Still & Box Alarm 11-24-13

This message comes from Eric Haak:

At 2:12 PM on Sunday, November 24th, fire companies on Chicago’s south side were called to a structure fire in the 8000 block of South May Street. Just three minutes later, Engine 129 reported a basement fire in a 30 by 125-foot, three-and-a-half-story ordinary apartment building. By 2:20 PM, Battalion 18 confirmed heavy fire on the basement and first floor and requested a Still & Box, which coincided with the time the first photo in this gallery was taken. The fire eventually spread to the second floor, making it a serious incident. In addition to the units seen in the photos, Engine 54 connected to a hydrant on Aberdeen Street, one block east, and stretched a line through the gangway to reach sector 3. The box was struck at 3:14 PM, and the Red Cross was on scene helping 11 displaced residents. These images capture the intensity of the response and the efforts of the firefighters working under challenging conditions.

Eric Haak captured several powerful shots of the event, showing the smoke-filled building and the firefighters in action. Each image tells a part of the story, highlighting both the danger and the dedication involved in such emergencies. It's a reminder of how quickly things can escalate and the importance of a swift, coordinated response.
