A 2-11 alarm fire broke out today at 6730 South Shore Drive, prompting a major emergency response and requiring an EMS Plan II. According to the Chicago Tribune, the incident left two men dead and one woman seriously injured after a high-rise building caught fire in the early morning hours.
All three victims suffered cardiac arrest, likely due to smoke inhalation, as reported by Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford. The two men were in their 30s and 40s, respectively, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. One was pronounced dead at 9:54 a.m. at the University of Chicago Medical Center, while the other passed away later at Jackson Park Hospital.
The man in his 30s was found on the seventh floor, and the other man was discovered nearby, both in full cardiac arrest. The woman was found in the building's lobby and was successfully revived by paramedics using CPR before being rushed to the hospital.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the operation. The fire started around 8:40 a.m. and quickly escalated to a 3-11 alarm, with officials requesting at least 10 ambulances. Firefighters worked from two different ladder trucks—one battling the flames on the seventh floor and the other attempting to reach residents on balconies on the opposite side of the building.
Langford said the fire may have originated in a bedroom on the seventh floor, and it spread to an apartment on the eighth floor. By 9:25 a.m., the blaze was under control. Despite the severity of the fire, the fire department did not order an evacuation, advising residents to stay in their apartments for safety. Firefighters then went door to door to check on occupants.
The scene was chaotic, with water from hoses and hydrants freezing into sheets of ice around the building. Dozens of fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars lined South Shore Drive, creating a massive emergency response.
