Libertyville Box Alarm 1-19-11

Wednesday evening after 9 PM, the Libertyville Fire Department in Lake County responded to multiple calls regarding a house fire at 516 Wrightwood Terrace. Interestingly, an off-duty firefighter first noticed flames coming from the unoccupied residence. By the time Libertyville's firefighting units arrived, they encountered significant fire originating at the back of the house. Recognizing the intensity of the situation, they promptly requested mutual aid. As the fire intensified, spreading through the roof and consuming the rear porch entirely, firefighters transitioned to a defensive strategy. Positioned in the 'A' Sector in front of the house, Libertyville's Quint 462—a 2008 Pierce Velocity model equipped with a 75-foot aerial—was quickly deployed. The vehicle's Wil-Burt telescoping light tower, extending to 75 feet, illuminated the area with its floodlights, creating a safer environment for firefighters tackling the blaze in challenging winter conditions. Meanwhile, Engine 461 also utilized its light tower, enhancing visibility across the scene. Supporting the operation was the Metropolitan Emergency Support Services (MESS), which provided a canteen offering warm drinks and snacks, as well as a warming bus to ensure firefighter comfort. Under these conditions, it took approximately an hour to bring the fire under control. Unfortunately, the house sustained severe damage, requiring extensive overhaul efforts to stabilize the structure. Larry Shapiro captured several compelling images of the aftermath. Despite arriving after the majority of the firefighting activities concluded, his photos vividly depict the scale of destruction and the critical role played by emergency services. A comprehensive gallery of these images can be viewed [here](link-to-gallery). One of the standout features of Quint 462 is its mid-ship-mounted Wil-Burt telescoping light tower, which proved invaluable during nighttime operations. Positioned directly in front of the burning building, it provided essential illumination for firefighters. The American flag graphic adorning the vehicle’s grille added a touch of character amidst the chaos. In another image, Engine 461 is seen parked behind Quint 462, showcasing its own light tower deployment. Designed on a Dash chassis, Engine 461 houses its pump panel behind roll-up doors, contributing to its sleek design. Libertyville operates a diverse fleet that includes various models such as the Dash, Velocity, and Quantum chassis. Additionally, the MESS canteen played a crucial role by setting up near the scene, offering much-needed sustenance and warmth to weary firefighters. Behind the canteen stood the MESS warming bus, further emphasizing the importance of auxiliary support in large-scale emergencies. These images not only document the aftermath but also highlight the dedication and teamwork involved in managing such incidents. The Libertyville Fire Department’s ability to adapt and respond effectively is evident in their strategic use of equipment and resources, ensuring safety for all involved.
