On Monday, March 7th, 2016, I happened to be in the area when a fire broke out at 5336 W. Leland Avenue. It's a neighborhood that's usually pretty calm but can get really busy at times. The radio chatter mentioned a basement fire that had spread to all floors of a wooden structure. Engine 94 did an impressive job positioning themselves in the rear, which is no easy feat in such a congested area. They stretched a 4-inch supply line down the alley and across the next block to reach the scene effectively.
From where I stood, it was clear that their strategy paid off. The firefighters worked quickly and efficiently, using handlines to contain the blaze before it could escalate further. I managed to capture some great photos of the rooftop operations as flames were visibly escaping through the back part of the building. It was all brought under control rather swiftly, which speaks volumes about the team's skill and preparation.
Here are a few of the images I took that evening. You can see the firefighters working tirelessly on the roof, the engines parked strategically in the alley, and the coordinated efforts of multiple units. These photos really capture the intensity and focus of the situation.
[Insert multiple photos showing different angles of the firefighting efforts, including firefighters on the roof, hoses deployed through the alley, and various fire apparatuses.]
It’s always humbling to witness how quickly these professionals can respond and adapt in high-pressure situations. Their dedication and expertise make all the difference in keeping communities safe.
