SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), in partnership with CGarchitect, a leading online platform for visualization and design professionals, has just announced the winners of the 2015 Autodesk Excellence in Infrastructure Competition. This prestigious competition aims to highlight some of the world's top applications of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in civil infrastructure projects.
Now in its fourth year, the competition recognized Arup, Ramboll – Parsons Brinckerhoff Joint Venture, and HNTB as the first, second, and third-place winners for their exceptional transit and bridge projects. Additionally, CivilE, LLC received the Small Project Award, while Dawn Digital Pvt. Ltd. took home the Visualization Award.
"Each of these winning projects exemplifies the transformative potential of forward-thinking BIM workflows and technologies when applied to complex infrastructure challenges," said Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President at Autodesk. "For instance, Arup’s first-place project involved creating a comprehensive model for a 17-kilometer railway extension in Hong Kong. By integrating GIS data from multiple sources and formats, they were able to consolidate crucial information about proposed stations, tunnels, public facilities, and existing structures. This effort showcased how BIM processes can enhance project management, facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, and improve communication among all stakeholders."
Organized by CGarchitect and co-sponsored by Autodesk and HP, the competition saw a panel of industry experts evaluate 40 submissions covering a wide array of infrastructure types, including airports, ports, bridges, tunnels, railways, roads, water resources, and utility projects. Entries were judged based on their complexity, innovative use of technology, sustainability, and ability to execute a BIM process that ensures confidence from project inception through completion, adding continuous value to operations and maintenance. The winners will be celebrated at the upcoming Autodesk University 2015 conference in Las Vegas.
**First Place: Arup**
Arup earned the top honor for their work on the MTR Shatin to Central Link railway expansion in Hong Kong. Spanning 17 kilometers, this ambitious project includes the construction of twin railway tunnels, a new underground station with interchange facilities, ventilation buildings, and shafts in the bustling Wan Chai district of Hong Kong Island.
“As one of the pioneers in BIM adoption, Arup remains committed to advancing the use of BIM across diverse disciplines and projects,†remarked Timothy Suen, an Arup Fellow and Director of Railway in East Asia. “Incorporating BIM into our design process has proven invaluable. Given the complexity and scale of this project, unforeseen conditions are inevitable. BIM enables us to make informed decisions by visualizing critical data, allowing us to explore alternative solutions efficiently while maintaining a clear overview of the entire project sequence.â€
**Second Place: Ramboll – Parsons Brinckerhoff Joint Venture**
The second-place award went to Ramboll – Parsons Brinckerhoff Joint Venture for their efforts on the Transport for London (TfL) Hammersmith Flyover—a 622-meter-long bridge constructed over 50 years ago that required extensive strengthening and repairs. Built using precast post-tensioned concrete segments supported by 15 central piers, the structure underwent detailed laser scans to ensure precision during the refurbishment process. Through close collaboration among all stakeholders, the team modeled proposed strengthening anchors and post-tensioning cables, verifying designs for fit and addressing any issues iteratively until reaching a successful outcome. Utilizing tools like Autodesk ReCap, AutoCAD, and Inventor in design workshops underscored the importance of accurate scan data and models in guiding construction tolerances.
**Third Place: HNTB**
HNTB secured third place for their contribution to the Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering’s Sixth Street Viaduct project. Beyond mere architectural and engineering feats, this initiative impacts urban fabric, landscapes, and community engagement. As California’s first bridge of its kind, it poses unique seismic restraint challenges. Advanced computer simulations were conducted to guarantee structural integrity under seismic conditions. BIM played a key role in facilitating civil and structural coordination, design analysis, architectural detailing, visualization, and cost/quantity estimation.
**Small Projects Award: CivilE, LLC**
CivilE, LLC won the Small Projects Award for their Walnut Park Apartments development in Austin, Texas. Covering approximately 18 acres, the site presented numerous design challenges, including a 80-foot elevation change and over 1,300 trees of varying species. The client, Larry Peel & Co., Inc., sought a layout that harmonized with the natural terrain while preserving as many trees as possible. Close coordination between civil engineers and architects was essential to achieve this goal. Employing BIM, CivilE streamlined multidisciplinary collaboration, simplified data handoffs, accelerated iterative design cycles, and enhanced communication. Their BIM approach demonstrated how Autodesk tools empower smaller firms to deliver impactful visualizations even within tight budgets.
**Visualization Award: Dawn Digital Pvt. Ltd.**
Dawn Digital Pvt. Ltd. claimed the Visualization Award for their work on Godrej BKC in Mumbai—a Class A office building developed by Godrej Properties Ltd. Designed by SOM, the building aims to provide an ideal workspace for modern businesses. Dawn Digital balanced aesthetic and functional considerations to craft a captivating fly-through video featuring dramatic music and seamless scene transitions that highlighted key phases of the project. Carefully selected angles, lighting, textures, and moods transformed static images into dynamic pieces of art, effectively conveying the building’s intent to foster successful business practices. With over 220 employees and offices in India, Vietnam, and Hong Kong, Dawn Digital stands out as one of the world’s premier 3D architectural visualization firms.
