Wheeling 2nd Alarm EMS Box 1-31-12

It was just past noon on Tuesday when the Wheeling Fire Department got a call about some workers feeling unwell at a local manufacturing plant. By the time the first responders arrived at 750 Northgate Parkway, they found dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide inside and quickly ordered everyone to evacuate the building. They started ventilating the structure while they tried to locate the source of the problem, which turned out to be a piece of machinery. Initially, only one worker showed signs of illness and was taken to a nearby hospital. However, soon after, several others began experiencing symptoms as well, prompting the fire department to request additional ambulances through an EMS Box Alarm. This brought in resources from Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Northbrook, and Buffalo Grove. Larry Shapiro happened to be at the scene and captured several powerful images during the chaos. As officials worked to ensure all affected individuals were receiving proper care, almost a hundred workers remained outside waiting for the CO levels to drop to safe levels before they could return inside. Before all the workers who felt ill reached the triage area, the Box Alarm had already been called off. However, due to more workers reporting symptoms, the EMS response escalated again, requiring even more ambulances. Additional vehicles arrived from Prospect Heights, Highland Park, Barrington, Glenview, and Des Plaines, along with two from Wheeling itself. Wheeling Ambulance 42 was designated as the triage point once it became clear there were multiple patients needing attention. Meanwhile, the Wheeling Fire Department chief coordinated with deputies to keep detailed records of each patient requiring transportation. Long Grove paramedics prepared to transport one individual to the hospital, while another worker was escorted to the Northbrook ambulance bound for Glenbrook Hospital. Buffalo Grove firefighters also assisted in handling another patient. As the situation unfolded, neighboring Buffalo Grove dealt with a separate issue—a small fire broke out in an industrial building just a block away. They received help from an Arlington Heights ambulance and Northbrook Tower 12. In total, 13 workers were transported to four different hospitals across the region. With the emergency situation largely under control, the Box Alarm was officially canceled, and any remaining ambulances were released from the scene. As the dust settled, it was clear that quick action by the first responders prevented what could have been a much worse outcome. The teamwork between various departments highlighted the importance of coordinated emergency responses in such situations.
