Just when we were convinced that our current project—cataloging every single department, station, and vehicle across the 19 divisions of MABAS—was already massive enough, Karl Klotz throws us a curveball by introducing us to yet another division! This time, it’s MABAS Division 7, located in Kankakee County. We’re thrilled to extend our welcome to these new departments and have already uploaded three of them to kick things off.
First up is the Grant Park Fire Protection District, which covers an impressive 62 square miles. With operations out of two stations, they rely on a team of 32 paid-on-call firefighters and officers. Their fleet includes three E-ONE rigs, an American LaFrance Eagle engine, and ambulances from both Horton and Road Rescue. Recently, they celebrated the opening of their brand-new headquarters station—a development we highlighted earlier.
Next, let’s talk about the Limestone Township Fire Protection District. Covering a slightly smaller area of 36 square miles, this district operates out of just one station but still manages to keep things running smoothly with 40 part-time firefighters and officers. Their vehicles include apparatus from Pierce, Quality (now Crimson), and Ferrara, along with Road Rescue ambulances. One of their most recent additions is a Ferrara Inferno pumper squad, which we mentioned previously. At their station, you’ll find not only two ambulances and two engines but also a pumper squad, a tanker, a brush unit, and even a pickup truck. A special thanks to Karl Klotz for capturing this image!
Lastly, we have the Momence Fire Department, which covers a sprawling 92 square miles from a single station. Their roster consists of 35 paid-on-call personnel who manage an extensive fleet comprising three engines, a brush rig, two tankers, and a rescue squad. These vehicles come from manufacturers like E-ONE, Pierce, and 4-Guys, while one of their tankers is something truly unique—a 1964 W.S. Darley model that was re-chassised in 1989 using a Ford C8000 platform by Quality Manufacturing. Interestingly, Quality Manufacturing later became part of Spartan, and eventually merged with Luverne Fire Apparatus to form Crimson.
As always, we’re grateful for the incredible contributions made by dedicated individuals like Karl Klotz, whose passion for firefighting ensures that we continue to learn and grow alongside these remarkable departments. Stay tuned for more updates as we delve deeper into the world of MABAS Division 7!
