Hi there,
I wanted to share some details about a house fire I came across earlier today. It happened around noon on Friday (May 22, 2015), at a two-story, older frame house located at 818 Forest Avenue in Deerfield-Bannockburn. The initial call came in for a structure fire, but before any units could arrive, the RED Center upgraded the alarm based on reports from police officers who spotted smoke coming from the building.
By the time the firefighters arrived, they found flames already spreading on the first floor, with smoke filling the entire house. Thankfully, thanks to the quick thinking of one family member, the fire was confined to just one room since the door to that room was kept closed. This decision likely played a significant role in preventing further damage to the rest of the property.
The crew managed to get the situation under control fairly quickly, using two fire hoses to douse the flames within about ten minutes. When the first responders entered through the front door, they focused their efforts on the room where the fire originated and successfully put it out without causing too much additional damage beyond what had already occurred.
A number of different fire departments responded to assist, including Deerfield Engine 19 & 20, Ambulance 19, Truck 20, along with Battalion 20 and several chief officers. Additional support came from Highland Park’s Truck and Battalion 33, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods’ Engine and Ambulance 52, Northbrook’s Battalion 11 and Engine 10, Morton Grove Squad 4, and Lake Forest Truck 421.
I arrived at the scene roughly 15 minutes after the initial dispatch. I took a few pictures while I was there. You can check them out below—these photos really capture the intensity of the situation.

Interestingly enough, excerpts from the Chicago Tribune mentioned how a Deerfield family managed to escape unscathed due to swift action taken by one family member who noticed the smoke, evacuated everyone, and promptly dialed 911. According to Deerfield Bannockburn Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Ray Larson, this decisive move likely saved the day, as closing the door to the affected room significantly limited the fire's spread.
Once the firefighters made their way inside via the main entrance, they tackled the blaze directly in its source room, minimizing collateral damage. Despite the fire being restricted to one area, smoke managed to seep throughout the house, which required extra attention during cleanup.
Thanks to everyone involved for their hard work and dedication in handling such emergencies so effectively. It’s always reassuring to see communities come together when needed most.
Take care!
Dan
