Teijin enters the market of high-performance polyethylene fibers

Teijin Corporation of Japan has announced the construction of a production plant in Emmen, the Netherlands, and began a large-scale entry into the high-performance polyethylene (HP-PE) fiber market.
The company said it was not convenient to disclose the amount of new plant investment, and the plant will be put into operation by the end of next year.
Teijin’s goal is to have a 15-20% share of the global HP-PE market by 2015. Teijin’s strong enemies in this area will be DSM and Honeywell.
HP-PE is made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) polymers with excellent impact, cut, abrasion, and chemical resistance. Typical applications include reinforced plastics, protective materials, ropes, nets, and medical materials.
Teijin Co., Ltd. stated that it had decided to invest in mass production after Teijin Aramid and Teijin Hi-Tech Products Co., Ltd. first stepped into this area. The two divisions are engaged in the development of HP-PE products at their respective research institutes in Arnhem, the Netherlands, and Iwakuni, Japan.
Teijin Co., Ltd. said: "In the product portfolio, new HP-PE, which also includes para-aramid, para-aramid copolymer, meta-aramid and carbon fiber, and the combination of a variety of such special materials Products, which will help Teijin further strengthen its global leadership in ultra-high performance materials.”
