The first aircraft parts of the Airbus A320 Tianjin assembly line were shipped from Hamburg

The assembled parts for assembling the first batch of aircraft for the assembly line of the Airbus A320 series Tianjin were issued by Hamburg, Germany, and were transported by sea to Tianjin, China. It is estimated that they will arrive in Tianjin 50 days later. Airbus A320 series aircraft assembly line in Tianjin will begin assembling the first aircraft in August this year. It is expected that the first aircraft will be delivered to Sichuan Airlines in mid-2009.

The first components shipped to the Tianjin assembly line included the front and rear fuselage sections, wings, horizontal and vertical tails, and engine hangers of an A320 aircraft. These components were assembled on six A320 aircraft special fixtures and were carried by a dedicated tugboat to the container terminal near Hamburg Port, and then transferred to a commercial container ship to Tianjin. It takes about 52 days for this voyage.

The Airbus A320 series aircraft assembly line at the Tianjin Binhai Airport Industrial Park also includes two paint workshops for the assembly of the tested flight route buildings and a delivery center. By 2011, the assembly line will reach a level of 4 aircraft per month, and more than 600 employees will work on the assembly line.

Alan Florence, executive vice president of A320 project for Airbus, said: “The shipment of these aircraft components to Tianjin is another important moment for our Tianjin assembly line. The construction of the Tianjin assembly line plant is nearing completion, with more than 180 Chinese employees are training at the Airbus plant in Toulouse, France and Hamburg, Germany. The Tianjin assembly line is Airbus’s first general assembly line outside Europe, and is an important step in the internationalization of Airbus.”

The Tianjin Airbus A320 series aircraft assembly line is a joint venture between Airbus and the Chinese consortium consisting of the Tianjin Free Trade Zone, the China Aviation Industry First Corporation and the China Aviation Industry Corporation No.2. Airbus owns 51% of the total. In the 49% of the shares owned by the Chinese consortium, the Tianjin Bonded Area owns 60% of the shares, and both Airline and Air China take up 20% of the shares.

The Airbus A320 family of aircraft, including the A318, A319, A320 and A321 models, is recognized as the industry standard for single-aisle series aircraft. Airbus pioneered the fly-by-wire control system through the A320 series aircraft, with cockpit and operational versatility among the models. At present, the A320 family of aircraft has more than 270 users worldwide, orders more than 6,100, and has delivered more than 3,400 aircraft, making it the world's most popular single-aisle commercial aircraft. Its industry-recognized reliability and extended service life make the A320 family's operating costs the lowest among all single-aisle aircraft.
