According to foreign media reports, Mercedes-Benz plans to invest 10 billion euros (about 12.4 billion US dollars) to expand the lineup of electric vehicles, and invest 1 billion US dollars (about 1.2 billion US dollars) to build a battery production network.
Mercedes-Benz is building electric vehicle and battery manufacturing centers around the world. Markus Schäfer, a member of the Mercedes-Benz Automotive Production and Supply Chain Division, said Mercedes-Benz will build six plants on three continents to produce electric vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz plans to launch more than 50 electric cars by 2022, launching at least one electric car model for each of its models. To achieve this goal, Mercedes will continue to support the development of plug-in hybrids and the introduction of 48 volt systems. Of the more than 50 electric vehicles, more than 10 are pure electric vehicles (a variety of models ranging from small cars to large SUVs).
In 2017, Mercedes-Benz has started production of the Smart Electric ForTwo Coup and the electric Fortwo Cabrio at the Hambach plant in France. In addition, the first electric vehicle EQC of Mercedes-Benz's EQ brand will be produced at the Bremen plant in Germany in 2019. Soon after, Beijing Mercedes-Benz Automotive Co., Ltd. will also produce EQC.
