Taihua shares: calcium carbide method PVC can be comparable with the ethylene method

Taihua Chemical's chlor-alkali branch has become a key player in the domestic production of calcium carbide-based polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The company has actively introduced advanced technologies to tackle quality issues in its calcium carbide process, significantly improving product performance. Today, its PVC products are on par with those produced from ethylene-based processes in terms of quality and reliability. On January 4th, the company successfully launched the Luohe brand suspension-grade universal PVC, which was recognized as a "National Customer Satisfaction Product" in Shanxi Province in 2007. Currently, PVC production in China is mainly divided into two methods: ethylene-based and calcium carbide-based. While ethylene-based PVC facilities are large-scale, high-quality, and profitable, their production costs are highly sensitive to international oil price fluctuations and require specific infrastructure conditions. In contrast, calcium carbide-based PVC, produced through coal chemical technology, offers a more cost-effective solution. With over 100 manufacturers producing PVC using the calcium carbide method in central China, especially in Shanxi Province, which is landlocked and lacks significant oil resources, developing calcium carbide-based PVC has become the most practical choice. Taihua Chemical’s chlor-alkali branch has consistently focused on technological innovation in PVC production. It has implemented a DCS (Distributed Control System) to enhance production efficiency and control. Compared to ethylene-based PVC, the overall technical level of its products is equally advanced. Over recent years, the company has significantly expanded its calcium carbide-based PVC production capacity, growing from 10,000 tons per year to 240,000 tons annually. To further improve its capabilities, Taihua has adopted both domestic and international advanced technologies for independent research and development. At the high-standard technological upgrade of its 150,000-ton-per-year PVC production line, the company addressed several key challenges in calcium carbide-based PVC manufacturing. This effort led to six major technological innovations that have been directly applied in production, resulting in improved conversion and absorption rates, better product quality, reduced consumption, lower costs, and enhanced safety and environmental protection. Moreover, Taihua is the first domestic company to integrate nanotechnology into PVC production, making it a leader in adopting cutting-edge production control and design technologies within the calcium carbide-based PVC industry. These advancements not only strengthen its market position but also contribute to the sustainable development of the Chinese PVC industry.
