As environmentally friendly recycled polyester gains momentum in the textile industry, Japan's Teijin Group recently held a press conference to announce a groundbreaking technology that claims to achieve a 100% recycling rate for polyester. This innovation, called ECO CIRCLE, is a comprehensive system designed for the development, recycling, and reuse of polyester products.
The ECO CIRCLE process allows only polyester garments to be fed into the recycling equipment. Non-polyester components like buttons, zippers, and labels, along with dyes and colorants, are automatically separated during the process. Through advanced depolymerization and refining techniques, the system produces high-quality polyester raw materials that match those made from petroleum-based sources. This ensures that the recycled material maintains the same performance and quality as virgin polyester.
Unlike traditional physical recycling methods, which often degrade the quality of the final product, Teijin’s technology enables chemical recycling that preserves the integrity of the fibers. This makes it possible to regenerate and reuse fiber products multiple times without compromising their properties. The process also significantly reduces energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions—by approximately 80% compared to conventional polyester production.
Teijin has been at the forefront of polyester innovation since 1958. In 1962, it began exploring ways to recycle polyester fiber scraps, eventually leading to a chemical recycling project for fiber raw materials. By 2000, the company had developed a new recycling technology that could transform plastic bottles, fibers, and films into high-purity polyester and ethylene glycol, equivalent in quality to petroleum-derived materials. A dedicated recycling plant started operations in April 2002.
Today, Teijin operates the ECO CIRCLE system at its Matsuyama Plant in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. It collaborates with apparel and sports brands to recycle and reuse polyester fibers. With the recent addition of a major American outdoor brand, the initiative is expanding globally, signaling a promising future for sustainable textile manufacturing.
