As environment-friendly recycled polyester continues to gain traction in the industry, the Teijin Group of Japan recently held a press conference, announcing a groundbreaking technology that claims to achieve a 100% recycling rate for polyester. This innovation is part of their ECO CIRCLE initiative, a comprehensive system designed to revolutionize the way polyester is produced and recycled.
The ECO CIRCLE system enables the recycling of polyester fiber garments by first removing non-polyester components such as buttons, zippers, and labels, along with dyes and colorants. Once these materials are separated, the pure polyester is processed through depolymerization and refining steps, resulting in high-quality raw materials that match those produced through traditional petroleum-based methods.
Unlike conventional physical recycling techniques, which often degrade product quality, this new method not only maintains but also enhances the quality of recycled polyester. It allows for the regeneration of fibers, making it possible to reuse textile products multiple times. Moreover, this process significantly reduces energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 80% compared to producing polyester from petroleum.
Teijin has been at the forefront of polyester research since 1958. In 1962, the company began exploring ways to recycle polyester fiber waste, eventually developing a chemical recycling project for raw materials. By 2000, they had introduced a new recycling technology capable of transforming plastic bottles, fibers, and films into high-purity polyester and ethylene glycol—comparable to petroleum-based products. A dedicated recycling plant was launched in April 2002, marking a significant milestone in sustainable production.
Currently, Teijin operates the ECO CIRCLE system at its Matsuyama Plant in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. The company collaborates with leading apparel and sports manufacturers to collect, recycle, and reuse polyester fiber products. With the recent involvement of a renowned American outdoor brand, the ECO CIRCLE initiative is expanding globally, signaling a promising future for sustainable fashion and textile industries.
