Chinese Cabbage Growing Season Skillful Fertilization

Cabbage growth stages and fertilization requirements: Chinese cabbage has a rapid growth cycle, and it's essential to ensure proper nutrient supply during each stage to promote healthy development and maximize yield. Based on practical experience, the plant absorbs about 10% of its total nutrients before the rosette stage, while 90% is taken up during the heading phase. Understanding these needs helps farmers optimize fertilizer application for better results. 1. Seedling stage: This period lasts approximately 15-20 days, from the emergence of cotyledons to the appearance of 8-10 true leaves. Although the plant doesn’t require a lot of fertilizer at this point, the early growth phase significantly impacts future productivity. After transplanting, it’s recommended to apply 10 kg of ammonium nitrate per mu to support strong root and leaf development. 2. Rosette stage: Once the plant enters the rosette phase, its root system expands rapidly, and the leaves begin to grow more vigorously. This stage is crucial because most of the leaves that will form the head are developed here. A large amount of fertilizer is needed to support this growth. It’s advised to apply 15 kg of ammonium nitrate per mu, along with some phosphorus and potassium to strengthen the outer leaves and lay a solid foundation for the upcoming heading stage. This period typically lasts 20-25 days and is critical for long-term success. 3. Heading stage: This is the most important phase, accounting for about half of the total growth period and two-thirds of the actual growth. Proper fertilization during this time directly affects the tightness of the head and overall yield. In the early part of this stage, 15 kg of ammonium nitrate is applied to encourage the growth of 1–5 inner leaves. As the head begins to close, the outer leaves stop growing, and a quick-acting fertilizer of 10 kg ammonium nitrate per mu can be used. However, in the later stages, due to reduced light and lower temperatures, plants absorb fewer nutrients, so additional top dressing may not be effective. At this point, it's best to reduce or avoid further fertilizer application.
