On February 14th, the *Southern Metropolis Daily* published an article titled *"Qingdao’s Chemical Project Over 500 Million Dollars Causes Public Panic,"* which immediately sparked widespread public concern. The Qingdao Lidong Chemical Construction Project and Sinopec’s “big oil refining†initiative quickly became focal points of debate. Many people drew comparisons to the infamous PX incident in Xiamen, urging government authorities to take public opinion into serious consideration and safeguard Qingdao’s clean environment and residents’ quality of life.
Six months after the Xiamen PX incident finally ended, the Fujian Provincial Government and the Xiamen Municipal Government decided to relocate the project from Haicang District to Gulei Peninsula in Zhangzhou, following public pressure. Now, the Lidong Aromatic Project has once again raised fears among Qingdao residents, who worry about the potential damage to their city’s natural beauty and living conditions.
As environmental awareness grows, more people are becoming vigilant about the risks associated with chemical production. However, many still lack a clear understanding of the chemical industry itself. Some people fear all chemicals as inherently harmful, believing that any chemical plant is a source of pollution. This misunderstanding has unfairly tarnished the image of the entire sector.
Rather than debating whether the Lidong project meets environmental standards or delving into the motivations of foreign companies investing in China, we should focus on the repeated incidents that have caused public anxiety. These events have forced us to reflect deeply on how to balance industrial development with public safety and environmental protection.
The petrochemical industry today faces a negative perception, especially after several high-profile accidents in recent years. From the Jilin Petrochemical explosion that polluted the Songhua River to the sulfur dioxide leak in Guiyang and the nitrotoluene tank explosion in Dadi TDI, these disasters have left lasting scars on public trust. As the industry expands rapidly, it's clear that some companies are operating with outdated equipment and poor management, creating significant environmental risks.
Many new small and medium-sized enterprises prioritize profit over responsibility, introducing outdated technologies or even banned polluting processes. The uneven development of chemical parks and insufficient investment in pollution control further complicate the situation. Additionally, the nature of chemical production often leads to facilities being built near rivers, making them a potential threat to local communities.
Multinational corporations (MNCs) are often seen as role models for environmental responsibility, but reports show that many have failed to meet their own high standards when operating in China. Some have been listed as polluters, raising concerns about environmental dumping from developed countries. In Qingdao, the involvement of South Korean investors in the Lidong project has only deepened public skepticism.
Despite this, modern life is heavily dependent on chemical products, and the industry plays a vital role in economic and social development. It’s important to address public fears fairly and transparently. Until there is solid data and clear assessments, we cannot definitively say whether the project will cause harm. However, such public outcries should serve as a wake-up call.
Government agencies, industry leaders, and other stakeholders must recognize the need for more scientific, long-term, and environmentally friendly planning in future projects. Only by improving overall pollution prevention, enhancing safety standards, and establishing a robust legal framework for environmental protection can China ensure that polluters face real consequences. This will help build public confidence and support a sustainable, green chemical industry for the future.
Injection molding is suitable for almost all thermoplastics. In recent years, injection molding has also been successfully used to form some thermosetting plastics. The molding cycle of injection molding is short (a few seconds to a few minutes), the quality of the molding products can be from a few grams to dozens of kilograms, can be a molding of complex shape, precise size, with metal or non-metal inserts molding products.
