The young Pang Youth, now 50, shares a similar background with Li Shufu, the founder of Geely. Both are from Taizhou in Zhejiang Province and have followed an unconventional path to success. While Li Shufu made his mark in the automotive industry through affordability and mass production, Pang Youth has taken a different route by strategically launching the "Lotus" brand. Today, he is the chairman of China Youth Automotive Group, the only private Chinese company that holds licenses to produce passenger cars, trucks, and sedans. His ambition is clear: to build a new car brand that competes on both quality and value.
Pang Youth's journey began in 1976 when, at just 18, he drove a small tractor in a local production team. He wasn't just a driver—he learned to repair and even modified the tractor himself, increasing its speed from 25 to 50 km/h. By 1979, at age 21, he started his own business, using a rented space in Tiantai County to make plastic bags. He later expanded into garment manufacturing, building a successful small enterprise. These early ventures laid the foundation for his future ambitions.
In 1986, driven by a desire to help alleviate poverty, Pang Youth invested 260,000 yuan in a rubber factory in Pan'an County, a remote mountainous area. The factory supplied major domestic bicycle brands like Phoenix and Sea Lion. Over four years, it became the largest rubber producer in the country, producing 15 million sets annually—surpassing even Shenzhen’s output. In 1993, he rebranded the company as Hangtong Group, with a capital of 380 million yuan, and took the helm as chairman.
His first real exposure to the automotive industry came when he considered entering the tire market. However, after research, he realized that investing in a full-fledged car project was not much more expensive. He shifted focus to luxury cars, leading to a joint venture with Beijing North Vehicle Manufacturing Plant in 1995 to produce high-end buses. Unfortunately, the partnership struggled, and by 1998, the company had sold only 8 vehicles, most of which were defective. Frustrated, Pang Youth bought out the remaining shares and went independent.
In 1999, he founded Jinhua Neoplan Vehicle Co., Ltd. and quickly moved into truck manufacturing. Using the chassis of the Guizhou Skylark, he secured a license and signed a contract with Iran. This marked a turning point, as he transitioned from a novice to a car industry leader. In 2004, he established the China Youth Automotive Group, becoming its chairman.
Today, the group operates across three main sectors: commercial vehicles, passenger cars, and auto parts. It owns 21 subsidiaries and is a major player in luxury buses, holding over 70% of the market for units priced above RMB 1.3 million. Its passenger vehicle division, however, is still emerging.
In January 2008, the group launched the Youth Lotus RCR Racing, a coupe developed in collaboration with British Lotus Auto Technology Engineering Corporation. Priced between RMB 129,800 and RMB 149,800, it saw 30,000 pre-orders in its first year. The company also partnered with Proton, aiming to sell 10,000 units over 20 months, targeting young professionals and middle-income workers.
Despite these successes, challenges remain. The group's broad product line, including buses, trucks, and cars, raises concerns about resource allocation. Even in commercial vehicles, where it has some experience, its efforts with German MAN have been modest. Sales of imported CKD parts were low, with less than 200 units sold in 2007.
In the passenger car sector, the group has pursued a wide range of partnerships—from Guizhou Airlines to Japanese and French automakers. But experts warn that spreading resources too thin could hinder long-term success. While the ambition is clear, focusing on one core strength may be key to sustained growth.
