Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) recently introduced a range of groundbreaking BIM technologies at its annual user conference, Autodesk University, in Las Vegas. These updates and innovations are designed to enhance the full lifecycle of building and infrastructure projects for AEC professionals.
Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Information Modeling and Platform Products at Autodesk, emphasized that the company is expanding BIM’s reach across both conceptual design and construction phases. “Our advancements are helping professionals move beyond 2D and 3D representations to designing in context while optimizing and predicting performance,†he said. This evolution supports greater productivity in both office and field environments through an expanded portfolio of desktop, cloud, and mobile tools.
Among the key announcements were major updates to Autodesk Dynamo and FormIt. The integration of Dynamo with DesignScript offers a powerful visual programming environment that enhances parametric modeling within Revit. Additionally, the new web-based version of FormIt allows users on Windows and Mac to collaborate more easily, while the iPad version now includes energy analysis features for early-stage design insights.
Autodesk also closed the acquisition of Graitec’s Advance Steel and Advance Concrete product lines, enhancing its structural engineering capabilities. Furthermore, the launch of Autodesk Structural Bridge Design, following the acquisition of Bestech Systems, provides engineers with a more efficient tool for small- to medium-span bridge designs.
The company also acquired Azalient Ltd., adding traffic simulation tools that help transportation planners better predict demand and manage infrastructure projects. In collaboration with Topcon, Autodesk is developing a new BIM 360 app to improve field layout accuracy and data feedback.
These developments follow significant investments in infrastructure and construction solutions, including the launch of InfraWorks 360 Pro and Vehicle Tracking. BIM 360 has seen rapid adoption, with over 15,000 monthly active users and 50 new daily sign-ups.
Gilbane Building Company, a top U.S. contractor, has embraced BIM 360 Glue and Field services, reporting improved on-site workflow and quality control. “BIM 360 Glue has transformed our process by allowing us to bring 3D models into the field,†said Daniel Raimer, Senior Project Engineer at Gilbane.
Hanspal added, “Our continued investment in BIM ensures we stay ahead of industry needs.†With these updates and acquisitions, Autodesk reinforces its leadership in the AEC space.
