Working fire in Chicago, 1-4-23

Excerpts from CBSnews.com:

A serious fire broke out at Pier 11 Marina on the Far South Side of Chicago on Wednesday, causing significant damage to at least four boats. Authorities estimate that the total damages could exceed $1.1 million.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m., when crews from the Chicago Fire Department and the Dolton Fire Department responded to the marina located at 826 E. 138th St., along the Little Calumet River near the southern edge of the city. Upon arrival, firefighters found three boats already engulfed in flames.

As crews worked to control the fire, it spread to a fourth vessel. According to initial reports, the fire was sparked during the winterization process of a recreational boat. This process typically involves covering the boat with a plastic tarp and sealing it with heat. The owner was using a propane tank at the time, which may have led to the accident.

One of the affected vessels was a historic boat used for tours on the Chicago River. It was operated by Chicago First Lady Cruises and its sister company, Mercury Cruises. The loss of this vessel has raised concerns about the impact on local tourism and historical preservation efforts.

From ChicagoFDMedia on Twitter:

Marina fire at 824 East 138th. Two boats involved. Firefighters have been battling the blaze for hours. Dolton FD arrived first, realized it was in Chicago, and called CFD, but stayed on scene with their aerial unit to help douse the flames. Possible cause: mishandled winterization process.
