Excerpts from CBSnews.com:
A fire broke out on Wednesday at Pier 11 Marina on the city’s Far South Side, causing significant damage to at least four boats. Authorities estimate that the total damages could exceed $1.1 million.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m., when crews from the Chicago and Dolton Fire Departments responded to the marina located at 826 E. 138th St., along the Little Calumet River near the southern edge of the city. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered three boats already engulfed in flames.
As emergency crews worked to contain the fire, it spread to a fourth vessel. The blaze was reportedly sparked during the process of winterizing a recreational boat. This involves covering the boat with a plastic tarp and sealing it with heat. The owner was using a propane tank at the time, which may have led to the fire.
Among the damaged vessels was a historic boat used for tours along the Chicago River. It was operated by Chicago First Lady Cruises and its sister company, Mercury Cruises. The loss of this vessel has raised concerns about the impact on local tourism and historical preservation efforts.
From ChicagoFDMedia on Twitter:
Marina fire at 824 East 138. Two boats involved. Firefighters have been working for hours to douse the flames. Dolton FD arrived first, realized it was in Chicago, and contacted CFD, but stayed on scene with their aerial unit to assist. Fire likely started due to a mishap during winterization.
