Last night, Deerfield Fire Department responded to an emergency call regarding a vehicle that had plunged into a pond on the 500 block of Lake-Cook Road. The situation was critical, and the first responding police officer quickly assessed the scene. He managed to climb onto the partially submerged car, break through the windshield, and help the driver escape safely. However, during this rescue operation, the officer sustained injuries to his hand while assisting the driver out of the vehicle. Initially, there was some confusion among the officers at the scene about whether there might be additional passengers in the car, as the driver wasn’t entirely clear about the situation. Due to this uncertainty, a request for dive teams was immediately put out.
In response, Highland Park, Northbrook, Lake Forest, and Lincolnshire sent their dive teams to assist. These teams thoroughly searched the submerged vehicle and confirmed that there were no other occupants inside. Once the area was declared safe, the divers secured chains around the car to facilitate its removal by a towing company.
Tim Olk was present at the scene and captured several images documenting the entire event. His photographs vividly depict the tense moments of the rescue, the officers’ efforts, and the eventual recovery of the vehicle from the pond.
One image shows a late-model Mercedes Benz that had veered off the road and ended up mostly submerged in the pond near Lake-Cook Road. Another captures a Deerfield Police sergeant with visible cuts on his hand, having climbed onto the roof of the car to break the window and save the driver. There are also shots of the firefighters lighting the scene and the divers preparing to attach chains for the tow truck. As the car was finally hoisted out of the water, Tim's camera documented the moment it was placed onto the rollback for transport away from the scene.
Tim has compiled a full gallery of these images, which can be viewed [here](link-to-gallery). This incident serves as a reminder of the bravery and quick thinking required by first responders when dealing with emergencies, especially those involving water hazards.
