FDIC 2011 highlights

The 2011 Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) recently wrapped up in Indianapolis, and it was another eventful year filled with new apparatus displays and exciting introductions. The convention center was packed with exhibitors showcasing everything from firefighting equipment and gear to unique merchandise like t-shirts and small souvenirs. This year, there were two notable local rigs on display: a Medtec Type III ambulance for the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Department was showcased in the Pierce booth, while a Cyclone II 95-foot rear-mount tower ladder for the University Park Fire Department was featured in the E-ONE booth. Other standout apparatus on display included four pieces for the FDNY. Seagrave exhibited FDNY Engine 222, a Wheeled Coach ambulance was on display on a four-door Ford chassis in one booth, and Ferrara had both FDNY Rescue 4 from Queens and Ladder 137 in their exhibit space. Crimson presented a tandem axle rescue for the Elizabeth, New Jersey Fire Department, KME showcased a tiller truck for Norwalk, Connecticut, American LaFrance displayed an LTI tiller for Ventura County, California, and HME brought a Type III wildland pumper for CALFIRE. In terms of new product introductions, Pierce unveiled the new Dash CF chassis under a PUC rescue pumper, and also exhibited a mini pumper on rubber tracks. Rosenbauer introduced their innovative Smart Cab enclosure, designed to add a crew area to units built on commercial chassis. KME launched the Predator Pro Series, an integrated pumper and rescue vehicle, along with a new 79-foot ladder. Crimson highlighted their acquisition of Classic Fire and showcased their ‘Transformer’ model on a commercial chassis. American LaFrance announced that their Eagle custom chassis is now available to other manufacturers, and their LTI aerials can also be purchased separately. E-ONE introduced the eMAX pumper series featuring a narrow operator’s panel. These new products and displays made the FDIC 2011 a memorable event for all attendees. It was clear that many manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of innovation in firefighting technology and design. From advanced apparatus to creative product offerings, the conference once again proved to be a vital platform for industry growth and collaboration.
