It was just after 7:30 AM on Friday when the Northbrook Fire Department received several calls about thick smoke billowing from a vacant house located at 1017 Shermer Road. When the first responding units arrived, they discovered dense smoke filling the entire ranch-style home, originating from a fire in the basement. Quickly assessing the situation, the department upgraded the response to a Code 4, signaling an active fire, and called for mutual aid from nearby Glencoe and Northfield teams to help manage the situation.
Once the flames were under control, an investigator's box alarm was issued to bring in experts from neighboring Division 3 departments. Their mission? To collaborate with Northbrook's team in uncovering the exact cause of the blaze.

One photograph shows Northbrook firefighters arriving to confront the fire, only realizing after ventilating a window that the source of the smoke was in the basement.
