New pumper/squad in Glencoe

The Glencoe Fire Department recently welcomed a brand-new addition to their fleet, replacing the older 1993 Pierce Lance with a more modern and compact 2010 Pierce Saber for Squad 30. This new vehicle features a Saber cab with a 10-inch raised roof, making it significantly smaller than its predecessor, which had a 20-inch raised roof. Unlike the previous model, this unit does not have a cascade system and offers reduced storage space compared to the earlier model. Currently, Squad 30 is still undergoing final preparations before it can be put into active service. However, preliminary inspections reveal that it is about the same size as Engine 30, another 1996 Pierce Saber in their fleet. The new Squad 30 is equipped with deep rescue-style compartments and carries a pair of extrication tools mounted in the front bumper. These tools are pre-piped, allowing for quick deployment during emergencies. Inside, the vehicle boasts an array of essential equipment necessary for firefighting and rescue operations. It includes a hydraulic ladder rack, airbags, spare air bottles, a powerful 1,500-gallon-per-minute pump, 500 gallons of onboard water, electric cord reels, cribbing, a portable generator for hydraulic tools, a variety of hand tools, and different types of fire extinguishers. Once the radio systems are fully integrated, the squad will officially join the department’s operational lineup. One notable feature of the new Squad 30 is its carefully designed interior layout. Nested tool boards provide organized storage for numerous tools, ensuring they are easily accessible when needed. The officer’s side of the vehicle also showcases a well-thought-out arrangement of equipment, enhancing efficiency during missions. On the rear driver’s side, there’s ample compartment space dedicated to housing additional gear, while the rear view highlights the deep compartments, NFPA-compliant chevrons, and the operational hydraulic ladder rack. Photographs taken by Larry Shapiro capture these details beautifully, showcasing the modern design and functionality of the new Squad 30. As the Glencoe Fire Department continues to upgrade its resources, this latest acquisition marks a significant step forward in their commitment to serving the community with state-of-the-art firefighting capabilities. While it may have fewer bells and whistles than some of its predecessors, the new Saber remains a reliable workhorse capable of handling a wide range of emergency situations. With its sleek appearance and practical design, Squad 30 is poised to become a vital asset for the department. Its arrival reflects ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the fleet, ensuring that firefighters are equipped with the best possible tools to protect lives and property. Although it is still awaiting final setup, anticipation builds among crew members who eagerly await its official debut on the streets of Glencoe.
