From Dennis McGuire, Jr.:
Late last night (early Monday morning), I got a call about a fire at 5757 South Hermitage. A CPD patrol car had radioed in reporting flames bursting out of the front window. Since we live just four blocks away, my friend Josh and I decided to head over right away. When we arrived, Engine 116 was already on scene, but we were close behind them. The fire was blazing out of the first-floor front room of a two-and-a-half-story, 25-by-50-foot wooden-frame house, spreading fast up the front facade. Engine 116 quickly set up a hose line from the front and started attacking the main body of the fire from the outside. Meanwhile, Tower 39 climbed onto the roof for ventilation work. Engine 123 moved in to assist Tower 39 with their deck gun, but that plan was eventually called off.
The firefighters did an incredible job containing the blaze before it could spread further. This area of Hermitage is densely packed with homes that are tightly connected, so if things hadn’t been handled swiftly, the situation could’ve escalated rapidly.
Here’s a quick summary of how things unfolded:
- Engine 116 took the lead with an aggressive exterior attack.
- Tower 39 focused on roof ventilation to prevent the fire from spreading upward.
- Backup crews were ready to step in as needed, but the initial efforts were enough to get the fire under control.
It's always impressive to see how well-coordinated everyone is during these situations. Kudos to all the responders for their quick action!
