Gene editing technology CRISPR can reduce the rate of miscarriage

Gene editing technology CRISPR reveals clues as to how human embryos begin to develop and may reduce the risk of miscarriage at several key moments before pregnancy. CRISPR Cas9 can modify or delete genetic defects that are believed to contribute to miscarriage, but so far it is not clear why some embryos continue to form fetuses, while other embryos still do not form fetuses. However, the published research results now have genetic clues.

British scientists have discovered that a certain kind of human genetic marker called OTC4 plays an important role in the formation and development of early embryonic development. Scientists used CRISPR Cas9 to knock out this important gene in human embryos and found that without it, these embryos no longer attach or grow properly.
These findings not only help us better understand why some women have more miscarriages than other women, but also may greatly increase the rate of successful in vitro fertilization (IVF) surgery.
Of course, this is not the first time scientists have tested on human embryos. Earlier this year, however, American scientists have used CRISPR technology to remove genes that cause heart defects in human embryos.
None of the embryos or the latest embryos in the study continued to grow and were discarded after the study was completed. This breakthrough practice may take years and may require more research, but it does provide hope for those who have already miscarried and hopes to ensure that they will be able to carry a healthy baby one day.
