Eight energy giants work together to develop measures to reduce methane emissions from natural gas

According to foreign media reports, British Petroleum (BP), Eni, ExxonMobil, Shell, Statoil, Total and Wintershall have signed a guide. The purpose of this document is to further reduce the methane emissions from natural gas products that it operates on a global scale. The global energy industry plan has made great efforts to ensure that natural gas continues to play an important role in meeting future energy needs while also addressing climate change issues. Since natural gas is mainly composed of methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas, the future change of natural gas to low carbon will be affected by the degree of methane emission reduction.

The eight energy companies signed a guidance document, mainly in the following areas:

● Continuously reduce methane emissions;

● Improve the strong performance of the natural gas value chain;

● Improve the accuracy of methane emissions data;

● Promote the establishment of sound methane emission policies and regulations;

● Improve transparency.

Mark Radka, head of the UN's environmental energy and climate department, said that many studies show that if you want to meet the growing energy demand and multiple environmental goals, then the rapid reduction of methane emissions is of great significance. This guiding principle provides a good framework for the entire natural gas value chain. It is developed by the United States Environmental Protection Association (EDF), the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Gas Association (IGU), and the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative Climate Investment (Oil and Gas). The Climate Initiative Climate Investments, Rocky Mountain Institute, The Sustainable Gas Institute, The Energy and Resources Institute, and UN Environment Agency jointly initiated.

Tim Gould, Director of the Supply Division of the International Energy Agency, said that according to the analysis of the International Energy Agency, in order to achieve global climate goals and natural gas goals, it must take practical actions to reduce methane emissions. This guiding principle is of great significance, and it is hoped that it can be widely applied and implemented and can achieve results.
