According to reports, as the third-generation nuclear power technology standard, the Westinghouse AP1000 is currently safer and more efficient than the second-generation nuclear power standard. However, the AP1000 has higher and more demanding requirements for the manufacture of key components such as the pressure vessel's integral top cover and the evaporator cone cylinder in the core equipment, which requires breakthroughs in technical difficulties during the manufacturing process.

With the commissioning of a 15,000-ton hydraulic press in China, the heavy forging capacity has increased significantly. The company signed a contract with South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries in November 2007 to provide a third-generation nuclear power evaporator cone for its No. 1 and No. 2 units. And most of the forgings of the pressure vessel, thus unveiling the prelude to the manufacture of China's third-generation nuclear power products. To this end, China has formulated the AP1000 localization strategy while introducing the advanced technology of the third-generation nuclear power AP1000 cone cylinder. Unprecedented challenges have inspired the research and development enthusiasm of China's heavy engineering and technical personnel, and they have provoked the burden of localization of the third generation of nuclear power technology. However, the first problem in front of the weight is how the cone is forged and fully demonstrates China's technical strength.

For a long time, the straight section of the cone-shaped cylinder at the end of the cone is the biggest difficulty in the forging process. The traditional forging method is to forge the cylinder directly into a "horn", and to realize the technical requirements of the straight sections at both ends by a large amount of processing in the later stage, but such a method wastes a large amount of molten steel and increases the manufacturing cost of the cylinder, and at the same time It also increases the manufacturing cycle. In order to overcome the technical difficulties of directly forging straight ends at both ends of the barrel, a Chinese technical technician explored and designed various special auxiliary tools. At the same time, a large number of computer simulations were carried out during the test, and solutions were formulated according to the simulation situation.

After the joint efforts of experts, engineers and workers, the world's first third-generation nuclear power evaporator cone barrel forging has finally come out. At present, the other 37 forgings of South Korea's Doosan No. 1 and No. 2 units, which are heavily-constructed in China, are in the process of production and are expected to be delivered by 2009.
