Hyundai Heavy Industries has recently delivered a state-of-the-art LNG vessel with a 216,000 cubic meter capacity, designed for an American oil company. This landmark ship introduces several innovative technologies that are reshaping the future of LNG transportation.
One of the most significant advancements is the use of diesel engines instead of traditional turbo steam engines. For over four decades, LNG vessels have relied on steam turbines, but Hyundai has taken a bold step by installing two 25,000-horsepower diesel engines as the main power source. These engines are paired with dual propellers, allowing the ship to reach speeds of up to 19.5 knots. According to reports, this switch improves the vessel's overall efficiency by 40%, making it more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly.
Another key innovation is the introduction of a system that reliquefies natural gas that evaporates during transit. Traditionally, the vaporization of LNG in storage tanks led to significant losses and waste. With this new technology, Hyundai can convert the evaporated gas back into liquid form, reducing losses and increasing the ship’s operational efficiency.
Additionally, the vessel no longer requires a dedicated engine for burning the evaporated gas. Previously, LNG ships had to install special engines to utilize the vaporized gas, which added weight and reduced cargo space. By eliminating this requirement, the ship becomes lighter, allowing for more LNG to be carried and improving its overall carrying capacity.
Beyond technological breakthroughs, South Korea is also investing heavily in LNG ship development. Major shipbuilders are ramping up R&D efforts, while the government has prioritized full domestic control over LNG technology. A collaborative "production-academia-research" team has been established to ensure independence from foreign technology and strengthen the country's position in the global maritime industry.
