Cai Weici, executive vice president of the China Machinery Industry Federation, stated on the 21st that China's research and development capabilities in clean energy vehicles are showing signs of decline. During a press conference discussing the economic performance of the machinery industry in 2007, Cai highlighted that China has successfully developed three types of new energy vehicles: fully electric, hybrid, and fuel cell models. Among these, fuel cell technology is among the world's best. Hybrid and pure electric buses have reached large-scale demonstration stages, while pure electric vehicles have started mass exports.
China has also made progress in developing engines that meet the national IV emission standards, with over 100 gas-powered vehicle models approved for sale. These gas vehicles have been deployed in more than 70 cities nationwide, with a market size exceeding 300,000 units and an annual fuel replacement of 3 million tons.
Dong Yang, executive vice president of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, noted that from January to November 2007, automobile exports increased by 52% year-on-year. Chinese self-developed brands played a major role in this growth. In 2007, China's total auto production surpassed 8 million units for the first time, reaching 8.88 million, a 22.02% increase compared to the previous year. This exceeded the initial forecast of 8 million units.
From 2000 to 2007, China’s automobile production rose from 2 million to 8.88 million, achieving an average annual growth rate of over 20% for seven consecutive years. In terms of product structure, commercial vehicles saw faster growth than passenger cars, with heavy truck production increasing by 77% and sales rising by 69%. This marked a significant shift in the industry's dynamics.
