"Ensuring sound and rapid economic and social development remains the top priority for the Party and the country, and it is also the central task that all levels of Party committees and local governments in Ningxia must focus on," stated Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the People's Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, during his inspection of the "Project No. 1" - the Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industrial Base. His remarks highlighted the importance of this initiative as a key driver for regional growth.
The Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industrial Base was established by leveraging the region’s abundant coal resources, forming a major cluster in energy, chemicals, and related industries. It plays a crucial role in the national plan for large-scale coal base construction, the West-to-East power transmission project, and the Yellow River Basin Coal-Chemical Industrial Zone. The base was included in the National Eleventh Five-Year Plan for Western Region Development and has now laid a solid foundation for further expansion.
According to the development blueprint, by 2020, the Ningdong base is expected to generate 18 billion yuan in revenue for Ningxia. During his visit, Xi Jinping toured the construction site and gained detailed insights into the core technologies, production processes, and operations of the coal-based methanol project. After listening carefully to the overall planning report of the Ningdong Energy and Chemical Base and the Shenhua Ningmei Coal-Based Methanol Project, he expressed strong support for the project's progress.
He emphasized the need to promote economic restructuring and shift the development model toward high-value-added industries, moving from price competitiveness to technological innovation and from cost advantages to brand strength. This strategic transformation, he said, will ensure sustainable and high-quality growth for the region. His visit underscored the government's commitment to fostering industrial upgrading and long-term economic stability in Ningxia.
