Over-reliance on foreign equipment will not be conducive to the development of the packaging industry

As China's economy continues to grow stronger, the packaging industry has also experienced rapid development, with an average annual growth rate of 18%. However, despite this progress, a significant portion of high-tech and advanced equipment in the industry is still imported from abroad. Industry experts have repeatedly emphasized that the heavy reliance on foreign high-end technology poses a serious challenge to the sustainable and stable development of China's packaging sector. It is well known that since the 1970s, China has introduced a two-way stretching device for plastic film, with a production line costing nearly 100 million yuan. To date, over 110 such lines have been imported. Similarly, aseptic packaging boxes and filling equipment used extensively in the dairy industry are almost entirely supplied by the Swedish company Tetra Pak. While the introduction of these advanced technologies has significantly accelerated the development of China’s packaging industry and helped narrow the technological gap with developed countries, it is clear that continued dependence on foreign technology is not a long-term solution. Relying too much on foreign technology can be costly, making it difficult for small and medium-sized enterprises to afford such equipment. This hinders the overall improvement of the industry's technological level and limits the development of indigenous intellectual property. It also makes it harder to cultivate local professional designers and engineers who could drive innovation. Moreover, the packaging industry serves as a crucial supporting sector for many areas of the national economy, especially food and beverage industries. The advancement of these sectors is closely tied to the progress of the packaging industry, including its technological capabilities and service support. Therefore, it is time to address the negative impact of outdated packaging machinery on the broader development of the industry. A more balanced approach—focusing on domestic innovation, reducing dependency on foreign technology, and investing in local R&D—will be essential for ensuring the long-term growth and competitiveness of China's packaging industry.
