On November 1, the first batch of 800 kV gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear (GIS) produced by China was unveiled in Pingdingshan City, Henan Province. This groundbreaking equipment, developed independently by Pinggao Electric Co., Ltd., has captured the attention and confidence of both domestic and international industry experts, as it marks a significant step forward in the revitalization of China's national manufacturing sector. The GIS is now on its way to Qinghai Guanting Substation, where it will play a key role in enhancing power transmission efficiency.
The 800 kV GIS project is a flagship initiative under the 11th Five-Year Plan, aligned with the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council’s guidelines for accelerating the development of the equipment manufacturing industry. It also represents one of the first major science and technology projects supported in Henan Province, highlighting the region's growing importance in advanced energy infrastructure.
In 2006, with the support of the National Development and Reform Commission, China Machine Tool Association, and the Henan Provincial Science and Technology Department, Pinggao Electric secured the contract for the Guanting Substation under the State Grid Corporation’s strategy to develop ultra-high voltage (UHV) grids. The company was awarded the bid for 800 kV GIS and isolating switchgear, with the GIS covering two intervals and three phases for the second phase of the substation project.
According to reports, the equipment is a high-tech product designed and manufactured entirely by Pinggao Electric. It holds full intellectual property rights and was the first in China to complete all type tests at the Xi'an High Voltage Switch Research Institute and pass national-level technical evaluation. The arc-extinguishing chamber uses a dual-break design, combining two 550 kV single-break interrupters in series. It is equipped with a high-power CYT hydraulic operating mechanism, achieving top-tier performance both domestically and internationally.
Han Hailin, Chairman of Pinggao Electric, recalled that developing 800 kV GIS technology posed immense challenges due to its complexity and high standards. To ensure success, the company established a dedicated project leadership team and formed specialized teams across various departments. After over a year of intense effort, the project was completed successfully. Additionally, Pinggao upgraded its production facilities and tooling equipment to enhance its capacity for manufacturing such advanced equipment.
Throughout the production process, strict quality control measures were implemented, including rigorous material procurement checks, on-site audits of key suppliers, and meticulous oversight of the manufacturing process. Special attention was given to cleanliness and dust control to ensure the highest quality standards. Employees worked overtime, while technical staff provided hands-on support to guarantee the successful assembly and production of the products.
Pinggao also carefully planned and supervised the packaging and transportation of the equipment, setting detailed requirements for on-site installation and training the installation teams to ensure smooth operation. After 11 months of hard work, the first shipment of three-phase circuit breakers, twelve-phase isolating switches, nine-phase current transformers, and related busbars was delivered on schedule on November 1.
It is reported that Pinggao will continue to follow the State Grid Corporation’s instructions and on-site installation schedules to ensure that the full supply to Guanting Substation is completed by the end of this year. This achievement not only showcases the company’s technological capabilities but also reinforces China’s position in the global UHV power market.
